I had every intention of writing a post about the budget deal that went down last night, but in scanning my favorite blogs, I came across this post from Angry Black Lady at her most excellent blog, if you don’t have it bookmarked, there is something wrong with you. :)
My opinion of Joan Walsh (Salon.com), up until now, has been pretty neutral, I don’t usually read her articles and mostly just see her on MSNBC. For the most part, she didn’t seem as anti-Obama as others in the “professional left” who have been and continue to make money on the backs of liberals. They haven’t all cashed in yet, like Arianna Huffington, give them time.
While reading through the twitter fight between ABL and Joan Walsh, it became very clear to me how she feels. You can judge for yourself. It also shed some light on why Glenn Greenwald could get away with calling us supporters of POTUS “Obama-lovers” with no repercussions. “Obama-lovers”…did you catch that? Here is the meat of the exchange on twitter that Joan Walsh is desperately trying to spin…

UPDATE:
I’m addling a comment that just came in over at ABL’s site that I just loved.
Author: Kerry Reid
Comment:
I generally agree, Ricky. But one thing I’ve found hilarious from the Firebagger set is that they can use the most vicious (and racist) invective against Obama — but if members of his administration should happen to dish it back even slightly, then they hit the fainting couches and clutch the pearls. It’s politics, kids. If you don’t have a Teflon ass, stay out of the kitchen. (Or mixed metaphors to that effect.)I’m just awfully glad some of the Whiny White Professional Left set weren’t in charge of the civil rights movement or the women’s rights movement or gay rights or any of the other significant social movements of the last 50 years — movements that frequently found the participants and leaders taking nightsticks to the head, forced feedings, teargas, imprisonment, police dogs, firehoses, actual assassinations.
Apparently one needn’t use actual sticks and stones to break the bones of the Poutrage Set. Words are enough to crumple them into a whimpering pile in the corner.

-
@mini_you well obviously the base is only whiny white people. what was I thinking?
-
.@joanwalsh @truthrose1 well there’s a strawman if I’ve ever seen one. What black people have said that they are THE BASE? Name one.
-
@mini_you I see her point, but I don’t know any black people claiming they are exclusively the base. It’s a stupid straw-man.
-
-
RT @natthedem: @AngryBlackLady @vcthree Wow. I can’t even believe she said that. // yup. meanwhile they’ve been ignoring blk ppl for years.
-
@joanwalsh Just see if you can elect your preferred candidate without us. ~spoiler alert!~ you can’t. #p2 #obama2012
-
@AngryBlackLady Can you elect YOUR preferred candidate without white progressives? This is destructive, and I’m done.
-
@sherifffruitfly @joanwalsh it was the bluntness that surprised me. refreshing, actually.
-
@tressam2 @joanwalsh I agree, except for the part where you said I’m wrong. ;)
-
@vcthree @Shopaholic_918 Thank you. There IS a context, but to get it, you’d have to intertwine about 5 threads. This is sad.
-
@skepticalbrotha i see her point. i think she meant that black folks aren’t *exclusively* the base. my response is, who is saying we are?
-
FTR I did not say African Americans aren’t part of Dem base; but they are not THE base. White progressives are not THE base either. Roshomon
-
@skepticalbrotha I asked Joan who SHE thinks is Obama’s base. No reply. Get real Joan! #obama2012
-
@Wary12 @truthrose1 Totally agree African Americans are huge and important part of the base. Said that in my piece.
-
@cindyloveseric @truthrose1 @AngryBlackLady Progressives of every color and class are the progressive base.
-
But, for about two years now, certain proclamations about Obama pissing off the base have not included minorities, and we have felt it.
-
@violetamichel @truthrose1 SOME was implicit. I was replying to someone implying African Americans are THE base
-
truthrose1 T MT @truthrose1 history will show how so called progressive wing of the Dem party was a toxic deceitful bunch of back stabbers
-
Just so folks know what level of insult I was responding to…
-
@AngryBlackLady …& yet you are taking that and commencing a circular firing squad? This is the Uhuru situation all over again.
-
@joanwalsh @truthrose1 @angryblacklady Ok. I was gonna let it go, but fuck it. Of course Black people are his base. And what about it??!!!
-
-
-
-
@cindyloveseric @truthrose1 @angryblacklady Did I say it’s NOT part of his base? This is silly. WE are his base. We sometimes disagree.

If Liberals are wondering why Conservatives are kicking our asses just look at the argument between @AngryBlackLady & @joanwalsh. God damn..
-
@Rawkuz99 @joanwalsh we’re not having an argument. keep up, sparky. joan and i have passed the virtual peace pipe.
-
-
@joanwalsh @Rawkuz99 Maybe I spoke to soon about that peace pipe thing. We people of color have been routine ignored by the so-called base.
-
@joanwalsh @Rawkuz99 I bring up that fact, and suddenly people are resentful? I’m charged with the circular firing squad? Um… no.
-
@joanwalsh @Rawkuz99 I’ll consider passing the pipe later. I have to play qrank now. ::shakes head::
-
@AngryBlackLady @joanwalsh I know that trust me…however that doesn’t mean we (I’m Brown) should throw a temper tamtrum.
-
@joanwalsh @AngryBlackLady but she didnt say she resented whites, you did say you resent african americans that say theyre the base.
-
@Rawkuz99 temper tantrum, my ass. I don’t throw temper tantrums. I make arguments. Give me a break and get over yourself.
-
@ReasonVsFear @AngryBlackLady @Johnswilson1 @cindyloveseric @truthrose1 Thank you, that was my point, made more elegantly by you! Good night
-
@Rawkuz99 and that means what exactly? I raised an issue of concern and recognized the straw-man @joanwalsh set up to bolster her “resent.”
-
@joanwalsh yes, i can see how you would view it as destructive. funny how that’s the case now that the “pissing off his base” meme fails.
-
that’s my point. minorities are not included in proclamation of the base. now that the base isn’t really the base, they’re resentful.
-
If there is one thing that irritates me it’s the way we Liberals tend to divide among ethnic lines when we disagree. @AngryBlackLady
-
@Rawkuz99 if there’s one thing that irritates me, it’s not being included until it’s convenient for a political strategy. also, privilege.
-
Doubt Joan Walsh includes blk ppl as “base” here. What a load of BS. | Obama 2012: Let’s talk next year http://shar.es/HammL #obama2012 #p2
-
And as noted yesterday, Walsh doesn’t name any blk ppl who claim to be THE BASE. And then offered what I NOW see as platitudes. #obama2012
-
And the subtext being that those of us who choose to organize early are joining a corp. juggernaut, not organizing with like-minded people.
-
And simply “masquerading” as grass-roots. Horseshit. More of us have blogs and diaries now. We have skype and gchat and Twitter.
-
Some of us have been chronicling the past two years. We know who was telling people to stay home in 2010. We remember every bit of news.
-
Every subtle dig. Every blog comment mocking us: “But oh no! What will the black community think!” The taunting and the sneering.
-
It’s not just Salon, and FDL, and DKos, and Huffpo who are runnin’ shit. Now there are smaller communities. Call it grassroots blogging.
-
We don’t get paid to blog. We don’t kow-tow to advertisers and a rabid audience. We write b/c we recognize the importance of this moment.
-
The crossroads that we face. This election will be the first, I think, where the little people will be of greater importance than before.
-
Netroots Nation is great and all, but what with the book deals and telly appearances. It’s gone a bit corporate. Agendas are being pushed.
-
I’m totally mind-rambling. Excuse the twitter stream pollution. But I am — how do you say — RESENTFUL.
-
And you should be scared. Because I’ve got an endless supply of finger-rants. And my bullshit-ometer has a fresh set of 9V batteries.
-
/FIN
-
@JEBocanegra1 exactly. don’t say shit if you don’t believe it. don’t lie b/c it will catch up with you. people are gonna get got. HARD.
-
I don’t know where that rant came from, y’all. But the Joan Walsh incident pissed me off more than I thought; the wine tempered the rage.
-
Her article is full of snide jabs at us NOTbase folks. Jabs at POTUS (who we should wait a year to support for some fucking reason).
-
And then the coup de grace is that we are masquerading as grassroots. I haven’t signed up for OFA. I donated 200 bucks to the DNC.
-
I haven’t yet donated to the campaign directly (although I damn sure will long before next year). Hell, I’mma make a large donation today.
-
Call it spite donations. Pairs nicely with my spite babies.
-
GRRRRRRRR.
-
@joanwalsh This is truly appalling: http://bit.ly/eXQMBY YOU DON’T SPEAK FOR ME.
-
-
@Dave_von_Ebers Thanks! Glad I don’t speak for you. Wasn’t trying to.
-
@joanwalsh Actually, it seems like you are. You want to lecture African Americans on behalf of “white progressives.” That’s disgusting.
-
@joanwalsh You really need to apologize for that tweet.
-
@Dave_von_Ebers The thing is, if you read my stream, I gave her the benefit of the doubt. As I often do when it comes to poor word choice.
-
@Dave_von_Ebers Then I read her article. And it wasn’t poor word choice. It was a tweet of passion, shall we say followed by platitudes.
-
@AngryBlackLady I’m sure you did.
-
@ThisIsTooEasy Yeah, it was the RESENT (all caps) that irked me.
-
@AngryBlackLady She seems to want to turn it into an issue of race. Sad, and disappointing.
-
.@ThisIsTooEasy Yep. Imagine if, say, Al Sharpton (since he is apparently the go to black guy) said he RESENTS white people etc.? #mayhem
-
@MarkBrooksVA I’m reading what she wrote. It’s appalling.
-
@MarkBrooksVA But I guess Important Progressive Journalists aren’t responsible for the actual words they use.
-
@Rawkuz99 i didn’t say that, now did i? crikey.
-
@meadrus true, but we lefties might as well hash our differences now. it’s gonna be a long 18 months. let’s hug it out, bitches.
-
@Rawkuz99 if there’s one thing that irritates me, it’s not being included until it’s convenient for a political strategy. also, privilege.
-
@Rawkuz99 no, we got into a fight because i had the temerity to point out that the base isn’t really the base, and the NOTbase is irate.
-
@MarkBrooksVA Then why doesn’t she delete the tweet, or at least apologize for it? It was at best tone-deaf, at worst, race-baiting.
-
Sorry, but I have zero tolerance for white folks, left or right, lecturing black folks about race. Well intentioned or not, please stop it.
-
@Shopaholic_918 I wouldn’t say that I’m angry with @joanwalsh, just disturbed by that one tweet. I think she should have retracted it.
-
RT @stopthemadness: Bullshit, Joan. Name one black person that has EVER said that ONLY they are the base. Name one. (@joanwalsh )

@MarkBrooksVA @vcthree No, people want to hate. Someone went out to stir this up again. It’s not about understanding. It’s pathetic
-
@joanwalsh Again, name a black person who made that claim. Please. You’re arguing in bad faith because you said something stupid.
-
Just read my timeline, and all the silliness that was said to me last night. Not doing this again. Will be on #blackingitup shortly!

I suppose “will be on #blackingitup shortly” is the twitter version of “some of my best friends are black.”
-
Oh Twitter. You’re so much fun. Looks like I opened up Pantera’s box. #malapropisms

@AngryBlackLady “all the silliness that was said to me last night. Not doing this again” || Arrogant crap, we’re not having it

@stopthemadness Read last Tweet. Done.

The first rule about #TeamBlackness is, you do not talk about Team Blackness.
As someone who has been a liberal since before I was born, it’s genetic, I know the Black American community IS the base of the Democratic Party. If we must group people together by different demographics…in this case race, there is no contest when it comes to what race is predominantly Democratic. If Joan “Resents” Black Americans for even thinking they might be the base, then you have to wonder what her problem is. The base sure ain’t rich, white women…that’s for sure.
I don’t want to sound like Steven Colbert when he says he doesn’t see race…but in a similar vein, it doesn’t occur to me to group people by race. I group people by Democrat and Republican, Wingnut and Sane, Informed and Uninformed…but it just never occurs to me to resent a different race of people for anything. But like I said, it’s genetic. I love my late parents, they were true liberals and showed it with their actions.
Excellent comment, ExtremeLiberal..I was looking to see who wrote that eloquent synopsis of their history.
The Black Americans were the base of the Democratic Party before Obama ran for Prez and now it’s only gotten stronger, thankfully. Imv, we got lucky when Obama wanted to run.
There are reasons to be “Obama Lovers” but clickmongers like Greenwald have to manufacture their hate and easy for them because the incentive of a fatter wallet gives them all the impetus they need.
There’s a “Dear Joan Walsh you do not speak for me” Post at DFP where I’ve added your link with snips and Angry Black Lady’s link for the original source of the ” Joan Walsh racist Twitter Problem”.
http://www.thepeoplesview.net/2011/04/dear-joan-walsh-you-do-not-speak-for-me.html
http://democratsforprogress.com/forum/showthread.php?mode=threaded&tid=4712&pid=28435#pid28435
As a child of the Great Depression, I can remember a time when Black America still had some loyalty to the “Party of Lincoln” as the Democratic Party was linked to the old Confederacy. Woodrow Wilson fired black federal employees in 1912 when he took over and blacks were not seated at Democratic National Conventions up through the 1920’s.!
Franklin D. Roosevelt was the first Democratic president who actively courted a color-blind “base” of under-served, poor, struggling Americans. FDR then got 71% of the black vote in 1936 and Truman pulled 77% in 1948 (desegregating the military helped him among black voters).
Blacks, however, still identified strongly with Lincoln and mostly called themselves “Republicans”. Most of the black voting was in the North since Jim Crow racism kept many from voting in the Deep South.
With black Rep. Adam Clayton Powell, Jr.’s endorsement in 1956, Eisenhower received 40% of the black vote (59% of the white vote), but by the time Nixon came along in the next election, he only received 32% of black votes with the majority going for John Kennedy. Eisenhower was helped by his push to desegregate schools such as in Little Rock and appointing Chief Justice Warren whose court gave us Brown v. Board of Education to call for desegregation of schools.
After LBJ pushed for and signed Civil and Voting Rights legislation in 1965, no Republican has received more than 15% of the black vote, since (Obama got 96%).
Nixon, with strategists Pat Buchanan [now with MSNBC] and Kevin Phillips, came up with the infamous “Southern Strategy” to urge the racists in the Democratic Party to come on over to the GOP. The racists were welcomed with slogans of “States’ Rights” which in reality were to mask racism. The Party of Lincoln, as it was founded, was dead. However, the Nixon “strategy” worked and ever since the Republican Party has been winning the “Solid South”.
A lot of progressives indeed have taken blacks for granted. They feel that bashing Obama is completely acceptable because they make the claim that they are bashing his policies. Yet as I’ve read through many reports I couldn’t help but feel that their is a certain amount of bias against Obama whether racial or other wise it grates on my nerves.
