You country needs your help today. This isn’t a liberal or conservative thing, a Democratic or Republican thing — this is an American thing. We must break the “everything is politics” cycle that the media and the cynics in this country cling to and perpetuate. Our country is on the verge of losing the middle class, of widening the gap between the rich and the poor and separating those in gated communities from those communities crumbling to the ground. Call your congressperson or senator, write letters to your local papers, comment on blogs…make your voice heard and tell them that you support President Obama’s American Jobs Act. Do it because it is the right thing to do for your family and neighbors, leave the politics out of it and fight against those who attempt to make it about politics. Spread the word far and wide, help put America back to work.

  3. Seems some wealthy EMPLOYED Republicans in Congress don’t want Boehner or Cantor to give into any parts of the American Jobs Bill.

  5. Yeah, I’ve seen the plan. I’ve read the plan. My question was “Who is sponsoring this bill and where can I find the text of it?” Our president has said repeatedly that “we have to pass the bill.” I’m asking what bill he is talking about. Where is the bill?

  9. Gov. Bobby Jindal of Louisiana has come out just before tonight’s CNN-Tea Party “debate” to endorse Gov. Rick Perry for President saying Perry “understand’s the vision of our Founding Fathers”. John King says that 42% of Republicans just polled by CNN say that Perry can beat Obama. Seeing the “dumbing down” of America over the years, Perry scares me as I have seen him work his charm on the macho men and adoring ladies of Texas.

  10. CNN’s Wolf Blitzer is announcing the candidates as if they were WWE wrestling stars, except for running out through a fog machine. Even the Star Spangled Banner sung by a black girl! In the pre-game interview John King asked VP Joe Biden IF Hillary Clinton was going to announce her candidacy. Got to stir up as much controversy as possible for RATINGS! CNN is working hard to win away fans from Fox News it appears.

When Blitzer asking what the candidates believed about health care if somebody came into the ER who hadn’t purchased health insurance, then asked, “Let them DIE?” and a cheer came up from the “pro-life” teabaggers. Last week the Republican mob at the Reagan Library cheered the death penalty several times. Rick Perry tonight, when defending his executive order to make all girls in Texas be vaccinated for HPV, he said it was his goal was to prevent cervical/uterine cancer, that he has a great reverence for “life” even as this week death row inmates #235 and #236 will be executed in Texas under his control. I am glad Bachmann brought up that Merck Pharmaceuticals, who manufacture the vaccine had made political contributions to Perry and that Perry’s former Chief of Staff was given an executive position with Merck.

    Rick Perry defending signing a law giving illegal aliens attending Texas state schools get the lower in-state tuition which got many boos from the racist teabagging crowd. Perry quickly clarified that he was against the “Dream Act” which he says is nothing more than “amnesty”. Everyone said they would revoke Obamacare even bringing up once again that it has “death panels”!

  12. I might watch the debate sometime but not anytime soon. I got a lot of other stuff to deal with as my mom is currently close to death and so many other difficult situations that have been building up steam. These republicans don’t seem to offer anything new and seem to be all about attacking Obama and giving no real solution that will solve anything or come close to helping this country.

    I’m angered that the house republicans blocked the disaster aid bill. They really don’t care about those who are going through difficult times. :(

  13. Sorry to hear about your mother, Jeff. I can empathize with you as my Dad passed on September 15, 1988 and my mother a decade later. We always think our parents will be there for us then all of sudden find ourselves the parent with the bulk of responsibilities on our shoulders.

    I find it hard to listen to the Republican talking points and their seemingly visceral hatred for the common man anymore, a deep seated hatred by many for our first black president. Abraham Lincoln surely rolls over in his Springfield grave. This is not the party he founded, nor the party I once supported in my youth.

    Our president was a constitutional law professor; he knows how the lawmaking game is played. When he implores the congress to ‘pass the bill’ knowing full well that no bill exists he is playing politics. He’s throwing nonsense out there and telling us all not only that it is the solution to our unemployment problem but that we have only congress to blame for our continued high rate of unemployment when it does not get better.

    A politically slick move that could only be pulled over on an ignorant population more concerned with pop-culture than the decline of our country; a population stupid enough to elect a president based on nothing more than powerfully idealist speeches and the promise of making history.

  19. Its difficult as she’s been having problems with breathing, can’t move her arms very much and needs help with eating. I am not so sure how long it takes for the process of dying happens but I’m sure its fairly soon. :(

  21. Ron Paul would be one of the worse presidents in American history if he ever got elected. Nearly as bad as Buchanan who was one of the worse presidents in American history due to his support of secession and slavery among other things.

    The REICH-wing is becoming a death cult, many obsessed with racist hate and no compassion for their fellow man. They love war, the death penalty and although claiming to be “pro-life” will ignore the health and education of the born child.

  25. loved this piece by Andrew Sulivan but I have to admit I only heard rare mention of him. The reason these guys hate Obama varies a lot of it has to do with race and the fact that they have Herman Cain means nothing because he’s no more than someone they prep up to state that they aren’t racist. I think there are other reasons, he’s a democrat isn’t the leading one but rather I think the leading cause beside race is that he exemplifies things that the republican party objects too out of hand. They hate his confidence, his self assured capability to reach out to the people.

    Sullivan is also correct in stating that if Obama loses this whole country loses. I am unsure at this stage if Romney or Perry is going to win, I think it doesn’t matter as much as people are led to believe. Romney isn’t some liberal, he’s very right winged and believes in very similar ideals as George W Bush.

  26. Our Houston Chronicle (Hearst-owned) still practices real journalism and has been doing investigative research on Gov. Rick Perry all along. We Texans have long known the skinny on our chief panderer but the nation is just beginning to learn about Rick “can’t be bought for only $5,000” Perry. Our governor has been on a government dole for most of his adult life starting with 5 years in the Air Force followed by 20 years in elected state government. He has become a millionaire several times over. Not bad for being a “servant of the people” but more for being a servant of corporations and their lobbyists.

    Perry’s “Merck” connection funded a petition drive last year to make sure the Green Party would be on our state ballot in order to draw environmental voters away from the Democratic candidate, Houston Mayor Bill White. The average Texan I fear no longer reads our reputable (but increasingly more expensive) daily newspapers getting their “news” instead from outlets like Fox News, hate talk radio, and an Internet that is rife with rumors and lies. I’ve noticed that in my cul-de-sac of 11 homes, only TWO of us homeowners subscribe to the Houston Chronicle. However, every house on our street does get a FREE suburban weekly thrown into our yards. This FREE newspaper is owned by right-wingers with ONLY right-wing editorials, right-wing “letters-to-the-editor” and a fundamentalist religion column written by local pastors. This FREE paper also has most of the supermarket ads, Kohl’s, Sear’s, Penney’s, Walgreen’s, CVS, etc. ads plus include the weekly USA Today weekend magazine similar to the Chronicle’s Parade. So why BUY a “lefty” Chronicle with it columns by Paul Krugman AND Charles Krauthammer? For balance, the Houston paper tries to give equal space to BOTH right and left columnists, political cartoonists including the Obama-hater Michael Ramirez….even Prickly City cartoons to balance Doonesbury!

    In looking at the New York City special election, only 17% turned out to vote which is dismal. Since Anthony Wiener won with 61% of the vote in 2010 and Dist. 9 has gone Democratic since 1920, I am sure many just sat on their hands, STAYED AT HOME thinking a Democrat will “win again” and thus were responsible for the Republican victory. LESSONS CAN BE LEARNED here about the importance of voting, even in “special elections”. It didn’t help that ex-Mayor Koch, a Democrat, told the orthodox Jews who make up a sizable demographic in that district that Obama was throwing Israel “under the bus” even though the USA is going to buck most of the world and vote NO when Palestinian statehood comes up soon for a vote in the U.N. The orthodox only make up about 1/4 of American Jewry and they are religious fundamentalists not much different in many respects from their right-wing Christian counterparts. However, 78% of American Jews voted for Obama in 2008. Another factor may have been these religious Jews are upset that “gay marriage” was made legal under a strong leadership by Democrats.

    Obama won the district by 55% of the vote, far fewer votes than Wiener’s 93% in 2008. Hillary Clinton beat Obama by 57% to 40% but she had the support of AIPAC members and Charles Shumer who once held that same District 9 seat. Compared to much of New York, District 9 is 85% white or Asian. However, gleeful Republicans today think this small victory means that Obama will not be re-elected. Yeah, New York will throw their electoral votes to a Republican wingnut?

    Although some swing voters call Obama “TRYING” “liberal” and “ineffective”, worse are their assessment of Congressional Republicans….”STUBBORN” “conservative” “selfish” “greedy”. I think President has better negatives than the Congressional Republicans which gives me some hope.

    Even before the polls closed at the special elections this week, the recriminations — something short of panic, and considerably more than mere grumbling — had begun. On a high-level campaign conference call Tuesday afternoon, Democratic donors and strategists commiserated over their disappointment in Obama. A source on the call described the mood as “awful.”

    “People feel betrayed, disappointed, furious, disgusted, hopeless,” said the source.

    So worrying about re-elections seems to trump many Democrats from doing anything to help out America, it seems.

  34. Grant, I completely agree. The argument I heard from Glenn Beck (I know, yecch) is that the adult person “made a choice” (not to buy health insurance, etc). But again, because someone made a mistake…they should die?? This is not the kind of world I want to live in.
