Let’s Indict Andrew Breitbart!

Guest Blogger: Mike Sax (@evilsax)

I have just started the following petition to do just this,

“Breitbert and his partner in slander, James O’Keefe, have single-handedly destroyed many worthy public servants and institutions, most notably Acorn which provided help and assistance to many low income Americans who desired to buy homes.

Breitbart and O’Keefe’s fraudulent video-based on entrapment, lies, and doctored footage-was the basis for Acorn’s slander, de-funding, and criminal prosecution.

While it was ultimately found innocent, Acorn is now broke and its reputation is wrongly sullied.

Mr. Breitbart needs to be held accountable and found both civilly and criminally responsible as his actions have stolen literally millions from the public in the form of the services Acorn provided.

Mr. Breitbart and O’Keefe also continue their tireless campaign against the American people and their interests, by targeting any public individual or institution that in any way serves their interests and needs.

Currently for instance he is attacking among many other falsely maligned targets, Media Matters, and the Service Employees International Union (SEIU)

A prosecution of Mr. Breitbart and O’Keefe – will serve the multiple functions of holding him accountable, recompensing his many victims, and also will provide an “ounce of prevention” by slowing down or stopping the harm he continues to work tirelessly to visit on the American people.

A true social criminal, Mr. Breitbart must be stopped in his tracks.”

Please join with me in stopping him in his tracks by signing this petition.

Gratuitous Granddaughter Photos – My Inspiration

As you may have noticed, I’ve been posting less lately. There are several reasons for this. The first is that I have been doing some research for a piece that is coming soon from a fellow blogger. Another reason is that the new semester has started at the university I work and teach at…so the day job is crazy right now. That will settle down in a couple of weeks. I’m also in “development” on 3 different documentaries and there has been some movement on the biggest of the three, which means work for me. I also just took on a committee at the university that adds to my already busy schedule, but it’s really cool…coordinating next years summer film, helping pick the script, director (which may be me) and more than likely producing it as well. I’m also teaching the special effects class that I created this semester…oh, and I may be editing a feature film in the next couple of months. How many hours are there in a day? I forget! All fun and exciting stuff, but not leaving much time for my real love, politics.

So please, keep coming back, I will certainly post when I can and I have several folks who said they will help me out with posts. Extreme Liberal’s Blog isn’t going anywhere and as we get into the campaign, you can bet I’ll have a lot to say. The final reason for my lack of posting can be seen in the following photos — the reason why I’m passionate about the future AND why I fight like hell to help elect Democrats who care a lot more about this little girl than ANY Republican. She really loves her grandpa and the feeling is mutual. :)

Republicans Take More Hostages — The Victims Of Hurricane Irene!

And then have a good laugh about it!

In a country that claims to be the greatest nation on earth, the Majority Leader of the House of Representatives, Eric Cantor, shows once again why Republicans should be voted out of office with extreme prejudice. Having held the world’s economy hostage all summer long and caused more hardship for people while attempting to extract even more money from poor and middle class Americans, Eric Cantor and his Republicans have decided to continue their assault on the American people.

Even before Hurricane Irene came ashore, the Republican leader made it clear that they weren’t going to help any of those people who were sure to be affected by the hurricane — that they weren’t going to get shit from the government unless it comes out of the pockets of the rest of the working and poor people in our country. He made it quite clear on Fox News that Republicans don’t care about hurricane victims at all…

Despite the devastation caused by Hurricane Irene this weekend, House Majority Leader Eric Cantor (R-VA) today stood by his call that no more money be allocated for disaster relief unless it is offset by spending cuts elsewhere. The Washington Post reported this morning that FEMA will need more money than it currently has to deal with the storm’s aftermath and is already diverting funds from other recent disasters to deal with the hurricane, but Cantor’s comments suggest Republicans won’t authorize more funds without a fight.

So here we go again, a new hostage crisis and this time it’s people along the east coast who were unfortunate enough to have chosen to live in the path of hurricanes. You have to wonder if the Republican’s really believe that their game of hostage taking is going to help them politically. The way I see it, hurricanes don’t discriminate against one party or another and in natural disasters, people pull together and put partisanship aside. Not so much for the current Republican Party, they are out of their fucking minds. Steve Benen sums it up like only he can do…(emphasis mine)

In the interview, the dimwitted Majority Leader tried to make this sound like common sense — instead of an unprecedented move. Remember, no modern Congress, regardless of which party was in the majority, has ever demanded offsets in response to American natural disaster, not even Tom DeLay’s.

[…]

Let’s also not lose sight of the larger context here. As far as Eric Cantor is concerned, launching wars in Iraq and Afghanistan do not need to be paid for. Tax cuts for millionaires and billionaires do not need to be paid for. Bailing out Wall Street does not need to be paid for. But when American communities are struck by a natural disaster, all of a sudden, House Republicans discover a new standard: if Democrats want to help affected areas, the GOP has some demands that must be met.

As if that isn’t enough to show that Republicans don’t deserve to be in power, lets “pivot” to one of the leading contenders for the Republican nomination, Michelle Bachmann, who decided to joke about the hurricane while it was happening. I’m sure you’ve seen our read her comments where she joked about the hurricane and earthquakes.

“I don’t know how much God has to do to get the attention of the politicians. We’ve had an earthquake; we’ve had a hurricane. He said, ‘Are you going to start listening to me here?’ Listen to the American people because the American people are roaring right now.

I’ll once again let Steve Benen put this into perspective for us.

I’ll gladly concede that the right-wing Republican delivered the comments in a seemingly lighthearted way, but it’s also worth noting that presidential candidates don’t generally joke about deadly natural disasters while the disaster is unfolding. Bachmann clearly liked the line well enough to repeat it more than once, but while she was drawing laughs, people were literally dying.

When anyone says to you that there is no difference between Republicans and Democrats, smack them upside the head and direct them to this post.

A Saturday Reading List For Pragmatic Progressives

What a crazy week in politics. When the politicians leave Washington, it seems like the pundits get restless and start making shit up and stirring up controversies to bring attention to themselves. Thankfully there is an awesome group of bloggers to bat down the bullshit. Check out these stories you might have missed that caught my eye.

  • Even though I personally understand when the President has to compromise with the Republicans, I want him to fight those motherfuckers more too. That’s why I’ve been looking forward to campaign season — where a president is allowed to be partisan and fight.

Liberals, Take A Deep Breath…Now Let It Out, Repeat!

Fellow liberals — listen up. President Obama and the Democratic Party are looking great going into 2012. Don’t let the media or our opponents on both the right and the faux left discourage you, that is their goal. The media wants every election to be close, it increases their ratings and we all know that is the only thing they care about anymore. Journalism, shmournalism! And of course the Teapublicans aren’t even living in the same reality as the rest of the country, they are running around chasing phantom problems that don’t really exist and holding prayer rallies.

As I always remind myself heading into an election year, 95% or more of the American people don’t pay a damn bit of attention to what is happening in politics until the conventions and debates start up. Sure, the hard core party folks are engaged in the primaries, but we know how many people actually vote in the primaries. The real fun doesn’t start until next summer, when people will begin to pay attention. Most everything that happens until then, will never even be seen or heard by that 95% of people who are going to work, playing softball, going to the beach, camping, going for bike rides and just hanging around the porch talking about bullshit. More of these people are aware of what Snookie did in Italy than anything that is happening in Washington.

So I say to you fellow liberals, don’t get bogged down in the heat of the moment. Don’t let current perceptions and media generated memes get you down or affect your motivation. We have an ace in the hole, President Barack Obama. Anyone who doubts his political abilities is fucking stupid, if you ask me. And when you consider all the stupid shit the Teapublican’s have done over the last 2 and 1/2 years that will be used as ammunition against them — once the campaigns get rolling in earnest, it’s going to be fun as hell to watch. The President has given us a taste of it in the last few weeks, but wait until he gets going.

When people try to get you to play the negative meme game or the “woe is me, I didn’t get my pony game” — be polite, cite some facts, some accomplishments, but mostly stay positive and remember that if the pundits were right, President George H.W. Bush would have served a second term.

How To Deal With Dysfunction On The Left!

The left wing in this country has been fickle and dysfunctional when it comes to electoral politics for a long time. I remember Ted Kennedy throwing a monkey wrench into the reelection of President Jimmy Carter after challenging him in the primaries. That is just one example of how our party often sabotages itself, another would be the Gore/Bush race of 2000 when the refrain from many on the left was that there was no difference between the two. We all know how well that turned out for us liberals and the country. Elections matter, damn it.

Today, we are experiencing the same type of crap, but we also have opportunists like Jane Hamsher, Adam Green and Glenn Greenwald making money off that fickleness and idealism from some on the left.

Tien at The People’s View has another great post that helps to explain some of the different types of “non-supporters” of President Obama and how to deal with each type.

In brief the Narcissist suffers from a pathological need for attention; hypersensitivity to insults and criticism; an over-inflated sense of self-importance; unrealistic expectations and a preoccupation with success and power.

[…]

Their belief system is composed entirely of being against whatever “The President” believes in.

  • Prospect for convincing them to support the current President: Non-existent.
  • Strategy for coping with their behavior: Never make it personal. Always focus on what they do, not what they say or who they are.

The best way to undermine Narcissists is to ignore them and deprive them of the attention they crave. However, I’ve come to realize that very few people are actually capable of employing the tactic of responding in this fashion. The Narcissist counts on people ‘reacting’ to everything they say, and most people, particularly online, oblige them. That gives the Narcissist unearned power, but there it is. Trying to change their minds is an exercise in futility.

Does that remind you of anyone? Since joining Twitter back in late April, I’ve observed Glenn Greenwald and Jane Hamsher in the Twitter world, where people’s thoughts are often a stream of consciousness, unedited and hard to put back in the bottle once let loose. These attention seekers send out Tweets that are clearly meant to inflame opponents and get them to either read their over-the-top rhetoric or engage with them online. I certainly fell for it initially, but soon realized that they were playing me and trying to get the attention that they seek. The more I gave them that attention, whether negative or not, the more they loved it. I’ve known for a long time that they would do anything for clicks on their blogs, since the traffic that helped to pay their bills dropped so dramatically after the 2008 election. That is why I never link to their websites. They don’t really care if the clicks they get are from supporters or opponents. But being new to Twitter back in the spring, it took me a little while to realize they were goading me into engaging with them for the same reasons. I’ve talked before about how they built their blog empires based on anger, mostly towards President Bush but also just anger in general. Republicans did it with the Tea Party anger and people like Jane Hamsher and Adam Green have filled that niche on the left. They have just shifted that anger towards President Obama.

Who Do You Think Will Get The GOP Nomination?

For a long time, I’ve thought that Jon Huntsman would be a formidable challenger to President Obama. I don’t claim to know a lot about him, but from what I’ve heard, he is someone who could appeal to the middle of the country. Of course, he has to make it through the “TeaPrimaries” and that is the one thing that may prevent him from ever facing President Obama in the general election. And to be honest, both he and Romney carry the religious issue around with them, so the evangelical wing of the party isn’t going to be thrilled with either of them. Republicans are pretty loyal, though and will more than likely rally around whoever is the nominee.

Even though I’ve thought that Jon Huntsman would give President Obama the best fight of any of the declared candidates, I’m not so sure he will get the nomination. The Awesome Bob Cesca thinks that Rick Perry will get the nod and makes some valid points in defense of his theory. I just seem to remember hearing too many crazy things that Perry has said in the past and that signals to me that he will self destruct along the way. His past statements may sink him. But Bob may be right. If he is, I’m sure President Obama will win in a landslide.

I guess I’ve been thinking that it will either be Huntsman or Romney that will get the nomination. The first few states may have crazy results like Perry or Paul or Bachmann (I can’t believe I just typed that :) ), but if those two can hold out past the first few states, I think the rest of the country will fall in line and pick the most reasonable candidate and to me, it’s either Romney or Huntsman. If I have to pick one over the other, I think I’ll pick Huntsman. But I know it’s a longshot.

Who do you think will get the Republican nomination in 2012 and what are you reasons why?

The comments are now open!
