Clinton Explains Romney’s $5 Trillion Tax Cut! [video]

I hope there are a lot more of these in the next 3 weeks. Thank you President Clinton for standing up for the truth and the American people.

On The Eve Of The Second Debate, Romney’s “Jobs Plan” Crumbles!

Republican presidential candidate Mitt Romney has been flying around the country promising to create 12 million jobs in his first term and he just released a new ad saying the same thing.

Thankfully, there are a few good print journalists left who remember what they were taught in journalism school and actually dug below the surface, beneath the manufactured reality that the right has hoisted on the American people. Glenn Kessler took a look at the 12 million jobs claim by Romney in his latest ad and discovered what I expected, a mishmash of bad math and wishful thinking. Go Glenn…(emphasis mine)

The analysis, which is prominently posted on the Romney campaign Web site, concludes:

“If we had a recovery that was just the average of past recoveries from deep recessions, like those of 1974-1975 or 1981-1982, the economy would be creating about 200,000 to 300,000 jobs per month. By changing course away from the policies of the current administration and ending economic uncertainty, as proposed by the Romney plan, we expect that the current recovery will align with the average gains of similar  past recoveries. History shows that a recovery rooted in policies contained in the Romney plan will create about 12 million jobs in the first term of a Romney presidency.”

I’m sorry, but any statement that begins with the word “IF” and then ventures down the road of false comparisons and rosy numbers should be thrown out on its face. But then they go on to say with a straight face that by merely “ending economic uncertainty, as proposed by the Romney plan”, the recovery will take off like a rocket and all will be well. When you are living in a fantasy world where you make up the numbers, create a fantasy candidate to run against and lie with abandon with no push back, I’m sure that the idea of just waving a magic wand over “economic uncertainty” is plausible. Why not, the rest of the Romney plan is smoke and mirrors – what makes anyone think they won’t get away with this either.

The man has “style” while lying through his pie-hole.

Glenn Kessler, to his credit, tears apart the basis for Romney’s “12 Million Jobs” ad and looks at the source for the claims in the ad.

But the specifics — 7 million plus 3 million plus 2 million — mentioned by Romney in the ad are not in the white paper. So where did that come from?

We asked the Romney campaign, and the answer turns out to be: totally different studies … with completely different timelines.

For instance, the claim that 7 million jobs would be created from Romney’s tax plan is a 10-year number, derived from a study written by John W. Diamond, a professor at Rice University.

This study at least assesses the claimed effect of specific Romney policies. The rest of the numbers are even more squishy.

For instance, the 3-million-jobs claim for Romney’s energy policies appears largely based on a Citigroup Global Markets study that did not even evaluate Romney’s policies. Instead, the report predicted 2.7 million to 3.6 million jobs would be created over the next eight years, largely because of trends and policies already adopted — including tougher fuel efficiency standards that Romney has criticized and suggested he would reverse.

The 2-million-jobs claim from cracking down on China is also very suspicious.

Now just to be clear, the above justifications for the numbers came from the Romney campaign. The 7 million jobs number is a “10-year number” and was the only study cited by the Romney campaign that was even based on the Romney “plan”, such that it is.

The 3-million-jobs claim came from a study that looks at 8 years and was based largely on policies that President Obama has adopted, some of which Romney plans to reverse.

The 2-million-jobs, that Romney thinks will magically appear, will materialize by “cracking down on China.” It is based on old numbers and economic conditions and relies on China cooperating on intellectual property rights. If you really think that’s going to happen, I have a nice condo in the Cayman Islands, very near Romney’s tax shelter corporation, that I will sell you really cheap.

With only 3 weeks to go until the election, it is astounding to watch the Romney campaign get away with the most shallow, fact free campaign for the White House that our country has ever known.

Thankfully there are still a few great journalists around that also care about truth….because damn it, it will set you free.

Why Romney’s “I maybe need to get a new accountant” Line Is Important!

I watched the same debate as everyone else on October 3, 2012, but for some reason, I was one of the few who wasn’t wowed by Mitt Romney’s “style” and slick used car salesman techniques. I’ll admit, as President Obama did, that he didn’t bring his A game that night. And I’ll also admit that Romney was slicker than hammered dogshit while telling his lies. He did it with nice hair, a square jaw and, with passion, was able to look his audience in the eyes and brazenly lie without any hint of remorse or acknowledgement that he was telling blatant falsehoods. He has no shame whatsoever.

Looking past the optics, I heard many things that made me sit up in my Lazyboy. The following exchange was one of the big ones.

President Obama: …And part of the way to do it is to not give tax breaks to companies that are shipping jobs overseas. Right now you can actually take a deduction for moving a plant overseas. I think most Americans would say that doesn’t make sense. And all that raises revenue.

Governor Romney: The second topic, which is you said you get a deduction for getting a plant overseas. Look, I’ve been in business for 25 years. I have no idea what you’re talking about. I maybe need to get a new accountant.

There are a couple of things wrong with Romney’s response to the idea that corporations can get tax breaks for shipping jobs overseas.

First, what he was saying is if he knew about tax breaks for shipping jobs overseas, he would have done it himself. He might as well have said, “holy shit, there’s a tax dodge that I wasn’t aware of, fire my accountant immediately!” Cuz, you know, he likes firing people.

Second, from what I’ve read about how Bain Capital operated, there is a damn good chance that he actually did take advantage of that tax loophole. I hope someone is looking into that, where’s Mother Jones when you need her?

When you step back and look at Romney’s life, business record and the many different positions he has taken on all sides of every issue, the picture becomes clear. He has no moral compass, contrary to the image of a faithful Mormon he has cloaked himself with. In the very first ad for the general election, he plucked a quote from an Obama speech where candidate Obama was quoting John McCain (“if we keep talking about the economy, we’re going to lose”) and attributed it to Obama himself. When he was confronted on it, his response was…

“It was instead to point out what’s sauce for the goose is now sauce for the gander,” Romney told reporters. “He spoke about the economy being a huge burden for John McCain. This ad points out, guess what, it’s now your turn. The same lines you used on John McCain are now going to be used on you, which is that this economy is going to be your albatross.”

He doesn’t seem to understand the problem with attributing a quote to someone who didn’t say it. If this were an isolated incident, it would be one thing. But Mitt Romney has lied his way through the campaign like no candidate in our nations history. The debate was no different, he told both old and new lies but was still declared the winner. It’s a sad day in America when such blatant dishonesty is ignored because, as one of the hyperventilaters on MSNBC said after the debate (about Romney), “he acted like he wanted to be President!”

SMH till it falls off!

Quote of the Day – It’s a great one!

Jay Smooth on Up With Chris in response to Romney’s birther moment:

“He was cleaning his dog whistle and it just went off!”

Sums up the Romney line very concisely.

Romney’s Welfare Lie Brings Out Sister Simone’s Ruler

Don’t mess with nuns!

Remember what Jake and Elwood went through in The Blues Brothers movie? :)

NETWORK, a National Catholic Social Justice Lobby, has invited Romney to join them – for a day – serving the people that the sisters help daily who are struggling in our tough economy. The Executive Director of the organization, Sister Simone Campbell, knows that these are the people who will be further harmed by the policies Romney is proposing and the recent divisive political ads about welfare. She released a statement that pretty much nails what is happening at the moment.

“Recent advertisements and statements from the campaign of Governor Romney demonize families in poverty and reflect woeful ignorance about the challenges faced by tens of millions of American families in these tough economic times. We are all God’s children and equal in God’s eyes. Efforts to divide us by class or score political points at the expense of the most vulnerable of our brothers and sisters reveal the worst side of our country’s politics.”

I really don’t understand how anyone who values honesty or is devout in any religion, can look the other way as Mitt Romney and his campaign spread one lie after another. If you haven’t seen it yet, Steve Benen is doing holy work at The Maddow Blog keeping track of Mitt’s Mendacity. (28 volumes of lies)

Quote of the Week – Romney’s New Olympic Maneuver

From Peter Sagal on his NPR show Wait, Wait Don’t Tell Me…

For his next stop, Romney went to Israel and gave a speech comparing the Palestinian culture unfavorably to Israeli culture. When everybody got mad, he said “I never said anything about culture.” He did, you can see it in the transcript provided by his campaign. Then after saying it, and then denying he said it, he wrote an op-ed and said it again. Now, in the Olympics they name a difficult move after the first person to do it in international competition. So from now on, the “Triple Self Contradiction with Vaguely Racist Backflip” will be known as the “Triple Romney”

You’re welcome!

The Romney Playbook – Deceptive Editing

Below is one of the latest ads from the Obama campaign. It pushes back against the very deceptive ad from Romney that takes a couple of sentences from a speech by the President and shuffles them around to create a nice, new lie.

I picture the Romney hacks sitting around watching every word the President says, just waiting for him to utter something they can selectively edit, distort and otherwise use to mislead the American people. It really has to suck working for Romney, they have nothing but lies.

Romney Is Shaking The Etch A Sketch On Immigration

It’s going to be a long, meandering campaign from the looks of it. Mitt Romney is going back to the drawing board and retooling his rhetoric for the general election.

Besides the problem of adding to his horrendous image as a serial flip-flopper, I think he will also suffer backlash from the right-wing of his own party. The primaries have shown that his support is tenuous at best as his competitors each took a turn as the “not Romney” candidate. He will have to walk a fine line to keep his support from anyone short of his immediate family.

I doubt that Hispanics will soon forget Mitt Romney’s previous actions with regards to immigration.

It’s also worth appreciating the fact that it’s far too late for the presumptive Republican nominee to “decide his position on immigration” — that decision was already made quite a while ago. Romney has already said he’s an opponent of the DREAM Act; he’s palling around with Pete Wilson and Kansas Secretary of State Kris Kobach; he endorses a “self-deportation” agenda; he’s critical of bilingualism; and his casual dismissals of “amnesty” and “illegals” are a staple of his campaign rhetoric.

He’s not “still deciding”; he’s already decided to be the most anti-immigrant major-party nominee in at least a generation.

I’m wondering when Willard will pull out the “that was my evil twin” line to explain his previous actions.
