Democrats In Michigan – Don’t Play Games And Give Legitimacy To Santorum

This idea of Democrats going to the voting booth and casting a vote for Rick Santorum in the Michigan primary is wrong for many reasons.

The first is that it is a “punk” thing to do. I can’t believe grown adults would think to do such a thing, it isn’t cool when Republicans do it to Democrats and it isn’t cool this time around either.

The next reason is that it demeans our entire process of how we elect our leaders and trivializes the process. It’s not a media generated horse race or game, these are our elected leaders and it should be taken seriously.

And finally, it will only serve to give legitimacy to Rick Santorum, one of the most offensive and hard right nut jobs to ever run for President. Is that what you as a Democrat want, to give more legitimacy to a nut job who already is attracting too many wackos. Chris at Eclectablog delves into this a little further…

It’s a batshit insane idea. It subverts the intent of our primary system, it’s a complete waste of money in Michigan where Santorum already leads and, perhaps most importantly, it gives the Republicans something to point to and coalesce around. That’s the last thing we need at this point. Frankly, the idea of giving any support to such a homophobic, anti-woman candidate is just repulsive. I don’t understand how any Democrat could pull the lever/punch the chad for such an odious candidate. The karmic backlash/whiplash would be an ass-kicker.

If the Republicans want to demean our process and play games, let them. But we as Democrats shouldn’t stoop to their level, but should stick to the ideals and principles that have guided us for decades.

The fact that Daily Kos is pushing this idea is just one more reason why I quit going to that blog years ago. Markos, a former Republican, doesn’t seem to respect our election process or understand the consequences of elections. It’s serious business folks and affects people lives. Resist the urge to add fuel to the scorched earth tactics of those who don’t respect our system. Act like a grownup, please.

  1. I’ve mentioned this before and I’ll say it again: this is a stupid thing not because it “not fair”, but because it’s not necessary and will likely turn back to bite Dems in a bad way.

    1) Either Romney gets to claim that he was really everyone’s choice all along (if he wins the nom), but those dirty hippies interfered like communists. Or something.

    2) If this helps Santorum get the nom, Santorum gets a shot at the presidency. A long shot, maybe, but still a shot, and long shots come in all the time. Santorum would be a far worse president than Romney in my honest opinion.

Seriously. The proper response to seeing your enemies ready to come to blows with each other isn’t “let’s you and him fight”, it’s “you all have a ball, you dumb fuckers”. And then maybe hand out a weapon or two. Keep the best weapons, though, you’ll need them to take out the winner.

  2. I thought about you when I first heard of this particular piece of nonsense and wondered if you would write about it. I also predicted your response if you did. :-) In this instance, for sure, people had better be careful of what they’re asking for in their search for a giggle. The stakes are way too high, and fate has an amazing way of coming around and biting one in the ass. If people think we’re suffering right now because of folks sitting home in 2010, that will be nothing in comparison to how they will feel being party at any level to a President Santorum.

    • We tend to think alike, Staci. :) Great minds….

  3. In a nation where gazillionaires can now BUY elections, like the Koch brothers and the uber-Zionist Sheldon Adelson, where reich-wing, with talk radio and Faux news are able to saturate markets with propaganda, it may mean that a total nut-job like Rick Santorum could become Herr Leader. Be careful what you wish for. Our nation could survive a President Romney but not so sure if a demagogue like Rick Santorum would gain such power.

  4. Once living in Corpus Christi, in a year where there were no real contests in the Democratic primary, many of us Democrats thought it “brilliant” to ask for Republican ballots and vote for the weakest candidate to hopefully go up against our Democrats in the fall election. I wish I had never done it as I am sure we didn’t change the outcome, however, for years I was on every Republican’s mailing list, email list and never got so much political SPAM in my life. I still get an occasional GOP fund-raising letter.

  5. Agree with your perspective wholeheartedly, I’m glad you posted about this. My entire post would have consisted of “what the ever-lovin’-f?” and yours is so much better!

    • Thanks Regina, voting is serious and has consequences…not something to be taken lightly or frivolously.

      • Speaking of voting, what is happening to the tyranny that is your state legislature and what they are doing to towns like Benton Harbor. Is there any movement from the populace to reverse any of these actions? Recalls? Pitchforks?

  6. I applaud your stance on this issue. Morality has no place in politics, as our elected paid for officials have proven, but this is over the top. Granted Romney stands a better chance beating Obama that any of the rest but even he can’t beat the huge special interest money given to Obama and the free media support.

There is always a slim chance Romney may win. Who would have thought a person with no qualifications, no work history and a hidden past could be voted in and Obama did it. Never underestimate the desire for a government free ride to propel the voter to keep their provider in office. Elevate the underachiever and denounce success, what a leader Obama is.

    • Typical TROLL response, Skudrunner!!! Obama won’t have the gazillionaire money like from the Koch Brothers, Sheldon Adelson, etc. who will probably drop a billion plus to buy the White House for the corpfascist neocons. Once again Barack Obama will raise funds mostly from a multitude of small donors (like me who has already sent the Obama campaign $25 a month for a few months now). Talk about FREE media exposure, the Republicans have now had 48 hours of network exposure of their endless debates with their constant bashing of the President broadcast to the nation, telling a multitude of lies about Obama’s record (even tonight in the Romney and Santorum speeches it was endless mendacity).

Obama has no work history? Get your head out of your ass. How about community organizing, a law career, a law school Constitutional Law teaching position? A hidden past? Are you still a birther conspiracist? Shows your IGNORANCE TROLL! But keep listening to Faux News and hate talk radio.
