Where Liberalism Is Alive and Well!

Republicans Hate American Jobs, But Love Sending Them Overseas!

That is not hyperbole either, those are the cold, hard facts. Steve Benen has an excellent post about why they hate American jobs so much…it boils down to one word, POLITICS! From Benen at the Washington Monthly…(emphasis mine)

THE GOP PLAN TO MAKE UNEMPLOYMENT MUCH WORSE…. The number one issue on the minds of most Americans is job creation. With that in mind, it seems rather important that congressional Republicans are pushing a plan that would make unemployment much worse, on purpose.

A Republican plan to sharply cut federal spending this year would destroy 700,000 jobs through 2012, according to an independent economic analysis set for release Monday.

The report, by Moody’s Analytics chief economist Mark Zandi, offers fresh ammunition to Democrats seeking block the Republican plan, which would terminate dozens of programs and slash federal appropriations by $61 billion over the next seven months.

Zandi, an architect of the 2009 stimulus package who has advised both political parties, predicts that the GOP package would reduce economic growth by 0.5 percentage points this year, and by 0.2 percentage points in 2012, resulting in 700,000 fewer jobs by the end of next year.

Zandi also had bad news for liberal Democrats who are resisting sharp spending cuts: Bringing deficits down to sustainable levels will require more than a growing economy.

If this seems familiar, it’s because it’s not the first report to raise this point. The Washington Post‘s Dana Milbank, relying on data compiled by the Center for American Progress, found that the Republican budget plan would force roughly 975,000 Americans from their jobs. What’s more, just last week, economists at Goldman Sachs estimated that the GOP proposal would reduce economic growth by as much as 2% of GDP, which would cause the unemployment rate to go up about a point.

[...]

This deserves to be the lead story for every major news outlet covering the debate. There’s no more important angle to the electorate that still says economic growth and job creation trump everything else.

I would, by the way, gladly note the Republicans’ response to this, but as far as I can tell, the GOP doesn’t have one. The House majority has seen these multiple projections, showing steep job losses, that Republicans have responded with nothing — no projections, no competing sets of numbers, no hearings on the effects of their cuts, nothing.

I remember when I first heard that the U.S. Chamber of Commerce supported outsourcing and in fact, encouraged American companies to do it, I almost fell off my chair. The U.S. Chamber of Commerce encouraging American companies to ship American jobs overseas…you have to be kidding me, right? Oh no, this is not a joke. They actually have offered classes on how to do it….how to stick it to American workers. From ThinkProgress…

The ties between the AmChams and the U.S. Chamber are deep. In addition to sharing staff members, the Chinese AmCham has worked closely with the U.S. Chamber and the Chinese government to sponsor a series of seminars in America to teach American businesses how to outsource jobs to China (called the China Grassroots Program). Below is an invite to an event sponsored by the right-wing billionaire Sheldon Adelson, inviting local businesses in Florida to come to Jacksonville and learn about outsourcing from Chinese government officials like Li Haiyan, the Counselor for Economic Affairs for the People’s Republic of China, U.S. Chamber lobbyist Joseph Fawkner, and BChinaB, a firm that specializes in helping American firms outsource their manufacturing jobs to China. Click the screenshot below for the invitation:

Now everyone knows that the U.S. Chamber of Commerce is a huge benefactor of the Republican Party and make sure that their beneficiaries of their largesse fall in line with the “company line.” But really, the name “U.S. Chamber of Commerce” should probably be changed to reflect what it really does. How about the “Foreign Chamber of Commerce” or the “Non-U.S. Chamber of Commerce” because they receive a lot of money from foreign corporations and I’m sure it has NOTHING to do with their stance on outsourcing, right? More from ThinkProgress…

Separately from their relationship with the AmCham affiliates, the U.S. Chamber of Commerce receives direct foreign donations to the same 501(c)(6) political account the Chamber is using to run an unprecedented $75 million attack ad campaign against progressives. In an exclusive investigation, ThinkProgress documented over 80 foreign firms donating at least $885,000 to the Chamber’s 501(c)(6) account. As ThinkProgress’ Brad Johnson noted, many of these foreign supporters of the Chamber financing its 501(c)(6) are also some of the world’s largest outsourcing companies.

Isn’t that just sweet, the U.S. Chamber of Commerce taking donations from foreign nations that compete directly with American companies for jobs. Does anyone else see a problem with this or is it just me? Even Ronald Reagan must be rolling over in his grave over this bullshit, and this is the same group of folks who claim to have a monopoly on patriotism and nationalistic pride.

How Much Did You Pay In Taxes Last Year? GE, Exxon-Mobil, Bank of America And Citibank Paid ZERO!

The Republican con of America continues and their brainwashing of Republican voters have made them believe that the real problem in America is those overpaid firefighters, teachers, police and union workers in general. To me, this is the most blatant campaign yet by conservatives to separate the wealthy from the working class people in this country. I can’t even believe the contempt I hear from conservatives towards the people who teach their children, police their streets, fight fires in their communities and do the jobs in factories that they would never do. Are none of these people members of their families? Are they really so removed from people who work hard for a living that they are able to label them, marginalize them and basically talk about them as if they aren’t really people but leaches. Do they pass this on to their kids and is that the reason why so many kids have no respect for their teachers or any other authority. The politics of smear, divide, diminish and lie has overtaken our country and caused many people to see everything through that veil. Is it any wonder that politicians are acting like they are, they are a reflection of the monster they created.

Think Progress has a great article about how little the largest companies in our country pay in taxes. Astounding…

[Gibson] explains, “I have one dollar in my wallet. That’s more than the combined income tax liability of GE, ExxonMobil, Citibank, and the Bank of America. That means somebody is gaming the system.”

Indeed, as politicians are asking ordinary Americans to sacrifice their education, their health, their labor rights, and their wellbeing to tackle budget deficits, some of the world’s richest multinational corporations are getting away with shirking their responsibility and paying nothing. ThinkProgress has assembled a short but far from comprehensive list of these tax dodgers — corporations which have rigged the tax system to their advantage so they can reap huge profits and avoid paying taxes:

- BANK OF AMERICA: …didn’t pay a single penny in federal income taxes…

- BOEING: Despite receiving billions of dollars from the federal government every single year in taxpayer subsidies from the U.S. government, Boeing didn’t “pay a dime of U.S. federal corporate income taxes” between 2008 and 2010.

- CITIGROUP: …Citigroup’s deferred income taxes for the third quarter of 2010 amounted to a grand total of $0.00.

- EXXON-MOBIL: …Although Exxon-Mobil paid $15 billion in taxes in 2009, not a penny of those taxes went to the American Treasury.

- GENERAL ELECTRIC: …he world’s largest corporation — filed more than 7,000 tax returns and still paid nothing to U.S. government…

Of course people on the right characterize asking corporations to pay some taxes as an attack on corporations. They don’t seem to have a problem “attacking” middle class Americans, teachers, firefighters, public employees, all types of union workers and those people who don’t have any opportunities in front of them. Not only do they want working people to bear the brunt of the deficits that were created by allowing the above corporations to not pay a fucking dime in taxes, but they want to cut services to people who don’t even have a fucking income for them to take any taxes from. It is the ultimate in kicking people while they are down and they seem to revel in it. They are the lowest form of scum, if you ask me

Big Lies In Little Wisconsin – Taxpayers Contribute ZERO, Zilch, Nada To Public Employee Pensions!

I just read this article over at Forbes about the big freakin lie that Governor Scott Walker and the “librul” media, cough, spit, choke have been pushing. It has even inspired commercials and campaigns all based on that lie. Here are some details from Rick Ungar at Forbes, with help from tax.com…

Pulitzer Prize winning tax reporter, David Cay Johnston, has written a brilliant piece for tax.com exposing the truth about who really pays for the pension and benefits for public employees in Wisconsin.

Gov. Scott Walker says he wants state workers covered by collective bargaining agreements to “contribute more” to their pension and health insurance plans. Accepting Gov. Walker’ s assertions as fact, and failing to check, creates the impression that somehow the workers are getting something extra, a gift from taxpayers. They are not. Out of every dollar that funds Wisconsin’ s pension and health insurance plans for state workers, 100 cents comes from the state workers.

Via tax.com

Got that, all the bullshit about “contributing more” to their pensions is a big lie. They already contribute 100% to their own pensions, taxpayers have nothing to do with it. Now as Rick Ungar put in his piece, if you want to call it a pay cut, go ahead, but misleading the public into thinking that taxpayers are paying for the workers pensions has to stop. The lie has been exposed and Bob Cesca said it best at his Awesome Blog! Go!…

The apologies and corrections are forthcoming in 5… 4… 3…

No?

Protests In Lansing, Michigan Over Governor Snyder’s Union Busting!

Check out these signs sent from some family members and fellow NEA/MEA members minutes ago from Lansing, Michigan where they are protesting similar cuts as Wisconsin’s wingnut Republican governor. Democracy in action. And of course because a lot of them are teachers, the signs are even spelled right. Enjoy…I’m sure there will be more.

I’m Sorry, But Governor Chris Christie Is As Dumb As A Box Of Rocks!

He’s like the male Sarah Palin, in my mind. For some reason the DC Media people fawn over him and his “plain talk.” They of course just love that “style” thing, but don’t ever seem to be concerned with what actually comes out of his mouth. Last week his very scripted line about raising the retirement age on Social Security and then his very clever punchline about still standing there, not being vaporized, wasn’t that oh so clever? The media just ate it up with a spoon, while all those seniors and us 50 somethings (and close to that) said to ourselves, oh yea, we’ll see about that! I saw him on “Propaganda Joe with Mika the Enabler” the other morning when he said that unions are destroying the middle class…I laughed out loud, seriously. That is the dumbest thing I’ve heard in a long time, unions helped create the middle class in this country, read a damn history book you mindless Fox News drones. Here is the clip from “Propaganda Joe”…

Think Progress has more…

Because of his mass layoffs of public employees, the number of unemployed workers has actually increased in New Jersey since Christie took office. And Christie’s assertion that unions are not good for the middle class is quite troubling.

As David Madland and Karla Walter pointed out, “the middle class is markedly stronger when workers join together in unions.” In fact, the decline in unionization rates over the last forty years has been almost perfectly mirrored by a drop in middle-class incomes. Income inequality in the U.S. is the worst its been since the 1920′s, with nearly 25 percent of the total income in the country going to the richest one percent. The richest 10 percent of Americans control 2/3rds of the country’s net worth.

Another Bizarro World Republican who sees up as down and down as up, black as white and white as black, helping rich people somehow helps the poor, and giving tax breaks somehow increases revenue. Cue the Twilight Zone music again.

Republicans Are Waging War On American Workers, The Sick, The Poor and The Elderly!

This post is a linkfest of fun. There are so many atrocities being perpetuated by the Republican Party, it’s hard to keep up with it.

That lovely woman in Arizona, Jan Brewer is sticking it to those sick and poor people real good.

And of course the prank of the day, the fake call to Governor Scott Walker shows how screwed up Republicans really are…listening to the call, you get the feeling it’s a minion reporting to the boss. He spent a lot of time explaining himself to his (fake) boss David Koch.

Republicans really want to kill people who don’t agree with them. Libya anyone! UPDATE before I even posted, the asshole was fired. Wooo hooo.

But Governor Walker in Wisconsin may be screwing his state even more than he thought. His anti-union bill might lose him some federal transportation funds.

Is Governor Scott “No-bid” Walker Really Into Sex Parties?

I’m waiting for the pictures of Scottie and his Wackenhut buddies who like to have parties like the ones shown below. In case you missed this story,  Governor Walker, when he was Milwaukee County Executive fired the unionized security at the county courthouse and hired this British company. No shit, he didn’t even hire a company from his own state or country. A little background from Think Progress…

The last time Wisconsin Gov. Scott Walker (R) went after public sector unions it had “disastrous results” for him and for taxpayers. As Milwaukee County Executive in 2009, Walker tried to get rid of the unionized security guards at the county courthouse and replace them with contractors, which he promised would save the county money. The County Board rejected the idea, but in March of 2010 Walker “unilaterally ordered it,” claiming there was a budget emergency. Walker hired the British security contractor Wackenhut — of Kabul Embassy sex scandal fame — to replace the guards. Unfortunately for Walker and Milwaukee taxpayers, an arbiter later ruled that Walker had overstepped his authority, and ordered the county to reinstate the unionized workers, pay backwages, and pay tens of thousands of dollars in arbiter fees.

Wackenhut came into the American public view in a rather controversial way, wouldn’t you say. They were the contractors in Afghanistan who like to party like frat boys and rugby players, apparently. The photos really say it all, don’t they.

Party animals, those Wackenhut employees. Woooo hoooo, let’s go party with Scott Walker in Wisconsin. Someone has to have photos of Scott with his British buddies, come on people, haven’t you ever heard of Photoshop?

Republican Governor Of Wisconsin Blocks Access To Pro Union Website – Are We Still In America?

Unbelievable!!! Now if that doesn’t speak volumes about this nut in Wisconsin, I don’t know what does. I’m almost speechless, I can’t even believe it. From Raw Story…

he Democratic Party of Wisconsin spoke out forcefully Tuesday after it was discovered that the state Capitol had blocked a website that was attempting to organize those protesting Republican Gov. Scott Walker’s plan to strip unions of their rights.Anyone trying to use the state Capitol’s Wi-Fi connection to access www.defendwisconsin.org Monday and early Tuesday received an error message.

University of Wisconsin-Madison Teacher Assistants created the website to share information with protesters and let them know where volunteers were needed. Democratic party officials claimed that it was available at the Capitol until at least last Friday.

“In a direct assault on the First Amendment, Scott Walker’s administration is blocking access in the Wisconsin Capitol to opposition websites,” Wisconsin Democratic Party press secretary Graeme Zielinski told CNN.

“It seems that we are entering a nightmare period in Wisconsin history in which Scott Walker is drawing all power unto himself, to the point that he feels comfortable blocking the First Amendment rights of protesters at the exact time they are exercising their First Amendment rights,” Wisconsin Democratic Party Chairman Michael Tate said in recorded audio message.

Facts That Need To Be Remembered – Social Security Is Fiscally Sound, Do You Hear That Media??!!

From Jacob Lew of the OMB, via USA Today… (emphasis mine)

The budget put forward by President Obama last week is a blueprint for how we can live within our means and win the future. As this begins the budgeting process in Washington, we need to be clear about the causes of the pressing fiscal problems we face. Specifically, looking to the next two decades, Social Security does not cause our deficits.

Social Security benefits are entirely self-financing. They are paid for with payroll taxes collected from workers and their employers throughout their careers. These taxes are placed in a trust fund dedicated to paying benefits owed to current and future beneficiaries.

When more taxes are collected than are needed to pay benefits, funds are converted to Treasury bonds — backed with the full faith and credit of the U.S. government — and are held in reserve for when revenue collected is not enough to pay the benefits due. We have just as much obligation to pay back those bonds with interest as we do to any other bondholders. The trust fund is the backbone of an important compact: that a lifetime of work will ensure dignity in retirement.

According to the most recent report of the independent Social Security Trustees, the trust fund is currently in surplus and growing. Even though Social Security began collecting less in taxes than it paid in benefits in 2010, the trust fund will continue to accrue interest and grow until 2025, and will have adequate resources to pay full benefits for the next 26 years.

For years, the surpluses in the Social Security trust fund have helped to mask our deficits elsewhere. Now that we are paying Social Security back, the problem is not with Social Security, but with the rest of the budget. In 2001 and 2003, Washington cut taxes for the wealthiest Americans and later expanded Medicare without paying for it. Blaming Social Security for our fiscal woes is like blaming you for not saving enough in your checking account because the bank lost all depositors’ money.

The problem is not Social Security; the problem is the mismatch between outlays and revenues in the rest of the budget. Closing that gap and paying down our debt will take tough choices, and the president’s budget makes them. Strengthening Social Security is an important, but parallel, issue that needs to be addressed as quickly as possible. But let’s not confuse it as either the cause of or a solution to our short-term fiscal problems.

Printed in full because it is too damn important.

Gov. Scott Walker Caused The Budget Problem In Wisconsin By Giving Tax Breaks To The Rich!

And now he wants the government workers to pay for it. Nothing like a little wealth redistribution the wrong way. Rich get richer, poor get shit on. This has to be the most blatant case of Republicans helping the rich and screwing the poor that we’ve ever seen. When anyone tries to say that these cuts to government workers are crucial to balancing the budget, respond by saying….well then, let’s repeal those tax cuts that got us into this mess. Gov. Walker is like a “mini-Bush”….cut taxes for the multi-millionaires and then stick the debt with working class folks.

He was handed a balanced budget when he took office, a balanced budget. So the only one to blame for this mess is the person looking back at him in the mirror. Don’t believe the Republican and media lie machine. Talking Points Memo has more…

Furthermore, this broadside comes less than a month after the state’s fiscal bureau — the Wisconsin equivalent of the Congressional Budget Office — concluded that Wisconsin isn’t even in need of austerity measures, and could conclude the fiscal year with a surplus. In fact, they say that the current budget shortfall is a direct result of tax cut policies Walker enacted in his first days in office.

“Walker was not forced into a budget repair bill by circumstances beyond he control,” says Jack Norman, research director at the Institute for Wisconsin Future — a public interest think tank. “He wanted a budget repair bill and forced it by pushing through tax cuts… so he could rush through these other changes.”

He is a sleazy bastard. Of course, he IS a Republican. There aren’t many left who aren’t sleazy, selfish bastards.

Planned Parenthood Helps People In Many Ways – Rep. Jackie Speier’s Story!

Thanks to Lawrence O’ Donnell for showing this on his show and interviewing Rep. Speier, the Republicans don’t give a shit about women. I’ll keep looking for the Lawrence O’ Donnell clip on Youtube, here is the link to MSNBC’s embedded video. This is Rep. Speier on the floor of the house, she is awesome.

Saturday Morning Cartoons – Foghorn Leghorn!

It’s hard to believe that these cartoons were made in the 50’s, it shows how animators are way ahead of their time. My favorite part, Daffy Duck saying “Walla Walla Washington”…they really don’t make cartoons like they used to, for the most part. There are some great ones being made today, but when you look back at what they were doing in the 50’s and 60’s it’s really amazing. Enjoy your weekend and thank a union. I’m in home improvement mode this weekend…finishing my basement, there are walls to be built, electric to be run, outlets, light fixtures…fun stuff.

Enjoy Your Weekend, Thank A Union!

I’m thankful for my union this weekend. Speak out for unions this weekend whenever the subject comes up. It’s important that Republicans don’t destroy the unions for their rich friends. Speak out.
