  1. Photo even looks quiet! Hard to imagine winter now in other parts while we’ve had temps under sunny skies around 70 all week. We may have 32 by Wednesday when the temperatures plunge to 40.

Geez, just turned on CNN and a U.S. Congressman, holding a “town hall” at a Safeway in Tucson, AZ was shot in the head close range along with some of her staff. As many as six could be dead and 12 wounded. The Congresswoman is Gabrielle Giffords, a Democrat first elected in 2006.
Is this the first of some “Second Amendment” solutions???

  2. Glenn Beck smiles!!!!

NPR has confirmed that the Democratic Congresswoman and 6 others are now confirmed dead in the shooting at a “town hall” meeting in Tucson. Gifford was re-elected to a third term this year surviving a tough race in Arizona’s District 8 with right wing Jesse Kelly.

Her office if Tucson had been vandalized when she signed the healthcare bill and her office has had some threats.

    • This is a sad day in our Country. I surely hope this has nothing to do with 2nd Amendment Rights. If this doesn’t wake up the new media.
Prayers for her husband and family.

  3. Reports this early are all conflicting including whether the Congresswoman survived what was described as a shot to her head at point blank. Supposedly 12 were shot out of about 20 rounds so a pretty good shot.

The serenity of this photo is needed to calm the rage I feel welling within me over this possible senseless murder of a Congresswoman in Arizona. Giffords is married to an Astronaut, Mark Kelly.

According to CNN, Gabrielle Giffords was a moderate Democrat, if anything could be labeled a conservative, “blue-dog”. Her opponent in the election, ex-Marine, Christian fundamentalist Jesse Kelly (no relation to husband Mark), was backed by the teabaggers. However, also heard one “contributor” to CNN say the shooter (who BTW is a 21 y.o. male in police custody) “could” have been from the “far left” upset that Giffords was not liberal enough! Well, we will soon find out.

    • Amen to the photo. Almost looks like our back yard here in Minnesota Land. We are scheduled for 3 more days of snow.

I am really sad about what is happening. It will take at least a week before all the facts come out about has really happened in AZ.

      Prayers for everybody.

  4. Guns are allowed at such “townhalls”, even those last year where our President was speaking. Arizona legislators have just introduced a bill to allow guns in their schools. So much for the Federal Gun Free School Zone Act of 1995 which has since been found weakened anyway by a 5-4 decision from the Supremes leaving it up to the states to decide on which gun laws they put on their books.

  5. It is a very sad day. I’m trying to resist the urge to start thinking it is some bigger disintegration of society. There have been these things in our history from the beginning. But I can’t help but think that the rhetoric you hear from all the loons didn’t have something to do with it.

I don’t think the crazies are going away anytime soon, unfortunately.

    • Is this the first of “2nd Amendment” remedies? Confusing is that the Congresswoman is “almost” a Republican by her “blue-dog” voting record. But she narrowly defeated a teabagger candidate. Think of the safety of liberals like Wiener, Franks, etc!!! Already talking heads are bringing up that possibly everyone in Congress should now have security. How can we spend the money for such a force when we have to “cut the deficit”!

  6. So far the only death confirmed by the University Medical Center in Tucson is a 9 year old child while five are in critical condition including Giffords and the top Federal judge in Arizona, a George H.W. Bush appointee. Thirteen in all were shot by 22 y.o. Jared Laughner, in custody, who used a pistol with an extended magazine.

Giffords was well-liked among many Republican friends. She had a moderate to conservative voting record and voted against Nancy Pelosi as House Speaker. Conservative Rep. Ted Poe of Houston has made a statement commending her work in Congress. She married Astronaut Mark Kelly who left NASA in Houston immediately. She met him while attending the Kennedy Space Center in 2008 and retained her Giffords name under which she was first elected in 2006.

  7. Shepard Smith just read some of Laughner’s Facebook on Fox News. Going to Laughner’s page, I cannot access much of it since I am NOT a friend of his but see he is a fan of Tea Party Patriots and Sarah Palin.

    http://www.facebook.com/people/Jared-Laughner/100001935064664

Smith on Fox read portions that the shooter only believes in paying WITH GOLD! The shooter doesn’t like messing the Constitution.

  8. Communist Manifesto and Mein Kampf are two of his “favorite” books! Here is the shooter’s crazy YouTube movie allegedly made by him.

Mostly heavy metal lyrics I cannot discern. Fox also notes that much of his Twitter account, etc. are being removed, possibly by a friend.

  9. Gone back to some links I had viewed earlier and they are now WIPED CLEAN (surely someone has captured them). One was that I linked to above for Jesse Kelly, the teabagger endorsed by Palin who almost beat Giffords in November (took 3 days to proclaim a winner). Kelly, a young ex-Marine fundie Christian had this up on Twitter last summer that is chilling:

I see that Sarah Palin has wiped her page clean of the map of the USA where she has 20 gunsights on Democrats to “lock and load” on including Rep. Giffords!

Giffords, once a registered Republican before becoming a blue-dog Democrat, seemed liked by everyone for her truly bipartisan attitude and didn’t seem to have any enemies. However, heard she was being considered to run for Sen. Kyl’s seat in 2012 as he may retire. That may have upset some.

There was so much REICH money to kill off Gifford’s campaign last fall that Keith Olbermann got into trouble because he had donated $2400 to her campaign.

  10. I doubt the shooter was a “far left liberal” due to the fact when right wingers try to play the false equivalency card between the nuts on their side and the whiners on our side they can’t find one insistence where a liberal used violence against people they disagree with them.

Hopefully the media stop turning a blind eye when Fox News incite their idiot followers to violence. And damn think about this you had these punks standing outside President Obama’s rallies with high power guns strapped on them.

  11. Now do we have 50 years of “grassy knoll” conspiracy theories ahead of us? Now they are looking for a middle-age white man who may have driven the shooter to the strip mall and then left the scene. Some of Jared Loughner’s writings sound as if he didn’t believe he would survive…IOW, suicide by cop. Judge Roll didn’t advertise he was going to be there as Rep. Giffords had both advertised and Twitted. The judge knew Giffords and just happened to come by in all probability to wish her well. Judge Roll, even though appointed by a Bush, was said to be fair and not partisan. He did have some racist enemies in Arizona. He received death threats while he presided over a $32 million civil-rights lawsuit filed by illegal immigrants against an Arizona rancher. When Roll ruled the case could go forward, U.S. Marshal David Gonzales said in 2009 that talk-radio shows cranked up the controversy and spurred audiences into making threats.

  12. The right is really out in force on the various pages that’s covering the story from TPM to Huffy Post and the news FB pages the right is trying to spin it.

What a difference from Republican President to Democratic President, during the era of George W.Bush if you dare to have his name in the same sentence with anything that sound remotely violent on the internet you got a visit from the Secret Service. Attend a Bush rally with a shirt the Bush campaign didn’t like and you was gone. Fast Forward to 2009 you can say anything about the president and hell if you want to stand outside a event where the President is attending you can stand outside with a powerful gun strapped to your leg and holding a sign threatening violence.

These people will never take responsibility for anything they say, all they will do is throw those fanboys that reacted violently under the bus and wash their hands of the matter.

  13. We need more beautiful pictures, Jim, to heal our souls….

Not sure as a nation we’ve learned anything from this. You should read some of the hateful comments all over like Yahoo (33K comments there now).

For example from the last half hour (note the CAPS SHOUTING and bad spelling):

    *****************************************

    The wrong Democrat was shot!

Yeah! Stupid Democrat just got her head blown off! I bet Obama’s scared sh1tless now! I bet he repeals his own health care law and does not run for reelection! Yeah!

An avowed pothead, atheist, who regularly read “The Communist Manifesto.” Definitely a libturd.

This guy wasn’t even a TEA partier or a conservative. This guy loved the Communist Manifesto and Mein Kampf. Not exactly conservative books.

the shooter was a registered Democrat, and a leftist extemist. He posted about Obama conquering conservatives…It’s you who foster violence, the left always has

I AGREE WITH YOU BRYAN , ITS JUST BEGINNING AND THAT IS WHAT IS HAPPENING NOW AND OBAMA IS LOVING IT AND HE COULD CARE LESS FOR HE HAS BEEN GROOMED TO DESTROY AMERICA AND YOU PEOPLE WHO STAND BY WILL WAKE UP SOMEDAY AND SEE THE CHANGE .

IT IS ALL OVER BUT THE CRYING ! AMERICAN PATRIOTS BEWARE THESE LIBERALS ARE GOING TO TRY AND STAGE A TERRORIST ATTACK SOMEWHERE IN THE US JUST PRIOR TO THE 2012 ELECTIONS , SO THE @#$% IN THE WHITE HOUSE CAN CALL MARSHAL LAW AND HOLD OFF ALL PRESIDENTIAL ELECTIONS , AND THEN COMES THE REVOLUTION TO ONCE AGAIN FREE AMERICA FROM THE SOCIALISTS AND MARXISTS THAT HAVE BEEN IN POWER FOR THE PAST 2 YEARS ! BUY YOUR AMMO AND WEAPONS WHILE YOU STILL CAN !

LIBERALS – OFFICIALLY THE PHILOSOPHY OF HATE AND HYPOCRISY:
    HATE CONSERVATIVES
    HATE FREE SPEECH (BUT THEIRS)
HATE DISSENT (WHEN THEIR GUY IS IN POWER)
HATE PALIN (BECAUSE SHE IS A CONSERVATIVE FEMINIST)
    HATE MORMONS
HATE BECK (BECAUSE HE’S A MORMON THAT SPEAKS OUT AGAINST SOCIALISM)
    HATE CHENEY
    HATE BUSH
    HATE THE BIBLE
    HATE ISRAEL
    HATE JESUS
    HATE CHRISTIANS
HATE CROSSES (law suits in California ACLU)
    HATE NATIVITY SCENES
    HATE THIS COUNTRY
HATE ANYONE THAT HAS MORE MONEY THAN THEY DO (EXCEPT THE ELITISTS IN THEIR PARTY)
HATE THE FOUNDING FATHERS (THEY WERE SLAVE HOLDERS)
HATE THE CONSTITUTION (THE FOUNDING FATHERS WROTE IT)
HATE THE SECOND AMENDMENT BUT ALLOW IRAN TO GET NUKES
HATE PEOPLE THAT DRIVE BIG CARS
HATE PEOPLE THAT DON’T AGREE WITH THEM ABOUT GLOBAL WARMING
HATE PEOPLE THAT DON’T THINK MICHELLE IS BEAUTIFUL
HATE PEOPLE THAT DON’T THINK OBAMA IS THE CHOSEN ONE
HATE PEOPLE THAT RESPECT THE MILITARY
I am really getting tired of the leftist spew of hate

He’s your typical flag burning, Communist Manefesto reading, nine year old girl killing lefty Democrat.

    Flag Burner = Liberal
Obama and Pelosi Supporter = Liberal
    Anti-Palin = Liberal
    Anti-Tea Party = Liberal
    Pot Smoker = Liberal
    Anti God = Liberal
    NUTS = LIBERAL

  14. Just observed a “moment of silence” for the Tucson victims, while looking at the very silent, serene photos on this blog.

I watched little TV yesterday as I just had to take a break. Pardon me for using your blog, Jim, to live-blog on Saturday, but I often write in a stream of consciousness as such a practice helps me deal with anger. I remember doing the same, writing, on 09/11/2001 (BTW, the birth date of the little girl murdered in Tuscon…Christina Green).

Reading some of the 33,000 “comments” after a Yahoo news article online was most disturbing (those I posted above are only a small fraction from the many alleged right-wingers). It appears, sadly for some, that nothing was learned and there are still too many in our nation so full of hate. Maybe it is better they did vent by writing than resorting to guns but they need to remember that “words have consequences”! There was “hate” from self-identified “liberal” posters on Yahoo, too, moreso at the beginning of the 33K responses. Those “liberals” were quick to try to affix blame on some political/media icons of the right-wing, which you can see brought out even more hate from right-wing posters. So, maybe for a few days, we all need to take a deep breath.

Linking to my favorite Houston blogger, Mugsy, whom I am often in agreement and a site where I sometimes comment:
